May 12th 2011 13:19
This summer, the Doppelmayr ski lift company of Austria is
building the world's most powerful aerial tramway ski lift
in Sochi, Russia---the site of the 2014 Winter Olympics.
The Dreiselbahn system, with two overhead cables for support
and one drive cable will be, upon expected completion in 2013,
capable of hauling not only passengers but automobiles as well.
The two-section lift will feature 28 cabins for 30 passengers and
25 automobile cabins. Total ride time for the 3,100 meter trip
is estimated at under ten minutes.
The first section loads at Krasnaya Polyana and transports passengers
and vehicles to the Pink Khutor Olympic Village. Section two rises
from the Olympic Village to the Rosa Kator finish area.
Total passenger volume for this impressive piece of engineering
is predicted at 4,500 people per hour.
