SUGARLOAF DOUBLES ITS SIZE
September 1st 2010 13:23
Sugarloaf Mountain ski area in the northeast woods of Maine
gets it! They figured out what expert skiers and riders really
want.
Real skiers and riders don't want more namby-pamby wide and boring
intermediate trails. They want challenging backcountry action
within reasonable return distance of a lift.
Sugarloaf plans to serve up the entire adjacent Burnt Mountain as
what they call: "Sidecountry Terrain." What's that?
Well, Burnt Mountain--to the left of the main mountain looking uphill--
will offer 655 acres of skiable glades and tight descents dropping
2,300 vertical feet. This best part is: The new terrain will be accessible
via a crosscut trail off the existing King Pine lift.
This ambitious project is scheduled to be completed over the summer
glades cutting seasons. For this winter, Phase I in the area
know as Brackett's Basin will open will 270 acres of terrain this
season.
As you might expect, there will be no snowmaking or grooming
on Burnt Mountain. However, there will be ski patrol rescue
available to help the injured. Hopefully, this service will be free
like it is on the main mountain.
During a good natural snow year, Burnt Mountain sounds like
a great place to check out!
