SOUTHERN SKI PIONEER PASSES
August 9th 2010 19:55
It is with great regret that we note the recent passing of native
Austrian and southern United States ski pioneer, Sepp Kober
at the fulfilled age of 88.
Mr. Kober came to the U.S. to teach skiing at Stowe in 1957
before migrating to the southeastern mountains of the United
States to help owners develop their mountain properties into
ski areas.
He was instrumental in designing trails, setting up ski instruction
programs, snowmaking and lift systems at The Homestead of
Virginia, Weiss Knob of West Virginia. Wisp of Maryland and
consulting on dozens of other ski development projects throughout
the southeast, including the impressive Ober Gatlinburg in the
Smokey Mountains.
Throughout his long career, Sepp worked tirelessly with ski
industry trade associations to further promote skiing and snowboarding
throughout the southeast and at the national level.
He was finally inducted into the United States Ski and Snowboard
Hall of Fame in 2009 after a number of years of nominations and
subsequent balloting.
