SKIER DIES ON K2
August 16th 2010 12:40
Swedish skier and mountaineer, Frederick Ericsson perished
on August 6 during an expedition to become the first to ski from
the summit of 28,253-ft K2 in northern Pakistan. Reports
from the expedition team indicate that the highly experienced
climber fell to his death while attempting to set a rope into
a rock.
In the early morning hours of August 6, three climbers--Trey
Cook, Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner and Ericsson set out from
Camp 4 to move to the summit with skis. Other members
of the party elected to stay back in camp to wait out the
poor visibility and high winds.
At the base of "the bottleneck," a decision was made to
return to Camp 4 due to the terrible weather. During the
descent, Ericsson--who was not secured by rope--lost
his position and fell an estimated 1000 meters.
Due to the difficulty in reaching his body, the decision was
made to leave Ericsson's body at the 7000 meter level.
A memorial service was conducted on August 9.
