SKI AREAS IN PLAY
September 11th 2009 13:55
It's that time of year when ski areas are sold or leased to new entities.
Two eastern ski areas are currently in play, one large and one small.
There was a serious possibility that Swain Resort, a modest sized
popular ski area in western New York State would not open this
season due to lack of a buyer for the struggling operation.
At the eleventh hour, a white knight galloped in from nearby
Pennsylvania to save the ski area from being mothballed.
The owners of nearby Ski Denton stepped forward with
a deal to lease Swain with an option to buy.
That's good news for Swain's loyal customers. Season pass
holders at both Ski Denton and Swain will have the option
of skiing at both areas at a reduced rate.
Over in northern Vermont, the legendary Stowe Mountain
Resort is being shopped around according to insider reports.
Although the ski resort does well financially, the problem
lies with its "to-stupid-to succeed" corporate owners: AIG,
the insurance industry behemoth, now currently eighty percent
owned by U.S. taxpayers.
The ski resort will operate this season but it may have new owners
by the time the snow flies. Stay tuned.
