ROLLER COASTERS FOR SKI AREAS
June 8th 2010 13:46
Seems like the next big thing trend for ski areas is installing
mountain coasters--a gravity powered roller coaster ride.
Developed by Wiegand company of Rasdorf, Germany, their
mountain coaster ride is proving to be a popular year-round
attraction for ski area visitors.
Presently their are six Wiegand Mountain Coasters in North
America with another in the planning stages for Okemo
Mountain in Vermont.
Coaster riders typically ride a ski lift to the top of the ride
where they strap into a two-seat "coasterbob"--a sled like
cars. The coasterbob descends on an elevated steel rail
track at speeds up to 40 km/hr through a series of waves,
banking loops and camel backs.
The Mountain Coaster is said to be derail proof for safety.
Unlike the tamer "Alpine Slide" sleds, the coasterbobs
can run in the rain or even snow.
Watch for more Mountain Coasters to be installed world-wide
in coming years.
