NZ AVALANCHE SWEEPS SKI PATROLLER AWAY
June 9th 2010 13:29
Even though the New Zealand ski season is just beginning,
an avalanche yesterday swept a Coronet Peak ski patroller
away. The early season avalanche was triggered yesterday
afternoon by ski patrollers inspecting Coronet Peak's
Back Bowls.
Fate was on the fortunate ski patroller's side however. The
patroller was able to dig himself out from under the snow with
a light-weight avalanche shovel he carried in his pack. The patroller
was not injured in the slide.
Today, two centimeters of fresh snow fell on Coronet Peak bringing
the base depth up to a range of 35 to 70 centimeters. Snowmaking
operations are currently underway.
