NY's SKI VALLEY TO REOPEN
January 4th 2012 23:02
A relic of a once bustling western New York ski area is
presently being dusted off and prepped for reopening
as get this: a year-round attraction.
Within easy driving distance of the populous Rochester,
N.Y,, metro area, Ski Valley in Bristol opened in 1965,
had some banner years in the '60s, was recreated as a
private ski club and foreclosed upon in 2001.
Although closed to the public, the mothballed base lodge,
12 overgrown ski runs and a creaky T-bar lift became the
private playground of one owner. Until he'd had enough of
the place.
Enter a new investor, Carl Welte, who grew up near the struggling
ski hill during its private club days. Welte made a few bucks
in the real estate business, logged some time at Colorado ski
resorts and decided Ski Valley needed a makeover with government
funding helping out, of course,
As everyone knows, skiers like beer so Welte plans to open
a brewery on the property. Well, some people prefer wine
rather than beer, so there will be a winery as well.
For those who don't care for skiing, there will be snowtubing,
concerts, ziplines and of course, hookups for your RV as well.
Like your skiing on the "green" politico side? Welte's got you
covered. He's gonna have wind power.
Wow, all this on a 610-ft drop mothballed ski hill? Of course,
permits and New York's governor has to help out with a check
before all these grandiose plans can become reality.
Nice to dream though.
