NO GIRLIE-MAN HELMETS FOR CALIFORNIA SKIERS
October 3rd 2010 13:04
California Skiers and riders won't be forced to wear helmets
on the slopes thanks to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's
veto of Bill AB 1652. It's a victory for freedom loving skiers
and riders.
Should state governments dictate how we ski and ride?
What we should wear?
In New Hampshire, whose state motto is "Live Free or Die,"
even motorcyclists are not forced to wear helmets while
riding. It's a personal decision, as it should be.
While wearing a helmet while skiing or riding is certainly
a good idea, it is simply a deceptive band-aide. Studies
have proven that ski helmets currently on the market are
useless in a direct collision at speeds over 16 mph, Most
intermediate and advanced skiers and riders travel down
the slopes at over 30 mph.
So no girlie-man helmets forced upon Californians this season.
But the knee-jerk reactive wimps in the state legislature have
promised to reintroduce mandatory helmet legislation next
year, after Arnold is disposed.
What's next? Mandatory wrist guards for bowlers? Hard hats
for golfers? Life-jackets for swimmers? Come on, leave sports
minded participants alone. Don't California legislators have
enough to do, you know with driving the state into bankruptcy?
