MT HUTT PEAK TO PUB RACE
October 1st 2010 14:12
The infamous Mount Hutt "Peak to Pub Race"--a grueling,
yet refreshing quasi triathlon with a twist---runs tomorrow,
October 2 at 2 p.m.
Competitors begin the event on the summit of New Zealand's
Mount Hutt ski area by sprinting 100 meters, in ski boots, to click
into their skis. Then they scream down the mountain for approximately
two kilometers to the base area.
Tossing their skis and boots aside, they hop on bicycles for a 19
kilometer descent on road and through field. Race organizer,
Steve Gurney, promises their will be course options for racers to
choose from on the fly. Last year there was a bone-chilling swim
short cut.
"I like to keep it fresh and exciting," says Gurney.
With the cycle portion completed, racers run 11 kilometer into the
town of Methuen's legendary Blue Pub to finish up by chugging down
well deserved pints.
This popular race draws about 100 hardy competitors each year. Entry
fee is NZ$55 per person or NZ$120 per team of three. For further
