MONTANA'S HORROR CHAIRLIFT
January 11th 2012 23:14
For skiers and snowboarders, few accidents can be more
horrifying than when the chair you are riding uphill on
suddenly detaches from its overhead cable and you plummet,
helplessly to the frozen ground, far below. Ouch!
During the recent busy holiday week, an antique Riblet double
chairlift at Red Lodge Mountain Resort, in Montana, lost one
of its chair with two riders aboard. The dang thing just dropped
off the overhead cable--a faulty grip that holds the chair to the
cable appears to be the culprit.
The two passengers aboard the 1968 Willow Creek Chairlift were
injured and transported off the mountain for treatment.
Ski lifts in North America are inspected before the operating
season for safety by permit granting government bodies but
not on a continuing basis.
Many times, metal fatigue inflicted by extreme cold temperatures
and operational demands combine to take their toll on aging
ski lifts, in this case a 1968 model chairlift.
