GHOST SKI AREA TO REOPEN
October 13th 2010 14:49
A long forgotten ski area on the outskirts of Saratoga Springs,
New York may reopen this season if all goes well. Darrow's
Slope, a classic 1930s rope tow served slope with a warming
hut was a favorite with local families.
Back in the day, five cents bought a day of skiing on the eight
hundred foot long slope, when there was enough snow to operate.
If no one was manning the rope tow on any given day, a local
who wanted to ski would simply crank up the old automobile
engine which powered the cantankerous rope tow, grab hold and
up the hill you go.
Somewhere in the 1950s, Skidmore College got involved with this
simple ski slope and operated it for a few years until they packed
up the rope tow and moved it to their new campus. Since the
early '60s, Darrow's has lied, well, fallow.
The current owner of the property, Carter Yepsen has plans to bring
back the skiing this year. He went out and purchased a used
handletow from a commercial ski area.
On November 6, Yepsen is holding a trail clearing work party
for anyone who wants to help get the slope in skiable condition.
Initially, he plans to open the tow to family and friends. People
who help with the work party become new friends, of course.
