FINALLY, A LIFT FOR MITTERSILL
July 6th 2010 14:43
After a three decade hiatus, lift-served skiing and riding will
return to New Hampshire's legendary Mittersilll ski area.
Founded by Baron Hubert von Pantz in the late forties,
the area featured classic Nrew England twisting, narrow
trails with a challenging vertical drop in the shadow of
Cannon Mountain.
In the sixties, Mittersill was an "in" Tyrolianesque playground
of the east coast glitterati, including Lucille Ball and family.
Over time, changing trends in the ski business and challenging
snow years took their toll on the place. Mothballed in the
early eighties, the ruins of the ski area were slowly vandalized.
A few years ago, state-owned Cannon Mountain received permission
to allow intrepid backcountry skiers and riders to access the overgrown
Mittersill trail via a connecting trail.
Now, this coming season: A new chairlift will be running following
Mittersill's original chairlift line!
