EARTHQUAKE DOESN'T STOP SKIERS
September 6th 2010 15:38
In spite of a 7.1 magnitude earthquake that rocked New
Zealand's South Island early Saturday morning, ski resorts
within driving distance of Christchurch remain open.
However, the airport has been temporarily shut down due
to the quake and roadways have been seriously damaged.
Miraculously, there were no reported fatalities in the quake
which destroyed over 500 buildings in Christchurch. Officials
attribute the low injury rate to New Zealand's strict building
codes. It was also a blessing that when the quake struck
at 4:35 a.m., local time, the majority of citizens were
off the city streets and out of the nightclubs.
Northwest of the city, ski resorts of the South Island are
operating as usual. However, air travelers and motorists
should check local travel conditions carefully before
heading up to the mountains.
