CLOSED ADIRONDACK SKI AREA TO REOPEN
November 12th 2009 20:06
Mothballed for a good decade now, a once popular Adirondack Mountain
ski area plans to reopen the day after Christmas on a limited basis.
With no snowmaking and volunteers for employees, Big Tupper Ski
Area will be operating on the proverbial shoestring.
In the fledgling ski area operation's favor is its natural snowbelt
location in the New York State's northwestern Adirondack Park
and strong community support. There's also a four year outdoor
oriented private college, Paul Smith's College a half hour's drive
away.
And of course, the low cost US$15 lift tickets should help bring
customer through the front gate.
Big Tupper started its life as a town owned ski area and then passed
through a succession of private owners, one of which had the bright
idea to remove the water fountains in order to sell more over priced
sodas. Needless to say, this greedy move didn't sit to well with the
locals in this logging community who in one way or another drove
the chump owner out of town.
Presently the property is owned by a developer who has pie in the sky
plans to build marinas, golf courses and multi-million dollar trophy
homes around the ski area. No go as of yet and no skiing either until.......
A bunch of local boys stepped in and said they'd run the ski area just
to keep it going for people to enjoy. So for this year, Big Tupper will
operate December 26 through January 4 and Friday through Sundays
during the rest of the season.
