February 8th 2010 12:40
This past week, killer avalanches claimed the lives of
eight skiers, snowboarders and trekkers in Germany
and Austria. Four of the dead included four British
serviceman on alpine training exercises.
Recently rising temperatures have negatively affected
the snowpack in the Oberstdorf region of Germany
and the Kasberg, Ponquam, Voralberg and Zillertal
regions of Austria.
Skiers and snowboarders in Europe are advised to
heed all posted avalanche warnings and to avoid
steep, off piste terrain.
