ASCUTNEY MOUNTAIN'S AGONY
August 15th 2010 13:03
Once again, Vermont's constantly beleaguered ski
area, Ascutney Mountain is bankrupt. Odds are good
that the place will be mothballed this winter unless
an investor with deep pockets and ski area
management experience emerges from the woods.
In the early 90s, the Plausteiner family bought the
mountain, dated hotel complex and crumbling
condos at a bankruptcy auction for US$1 million.
Although they tried to make a go of it, they effectively
ran this mid-sized ski area into the ground through
poor management, cutting corners and treating the
help and customers alike, well, like dirtbags.
Now they are cast out as well. Last week, the
Plausteiner's million dollar mortgage holder foreclosed
on them. Before turning out the lights, the Plausteiners
left the mortage holder, Dan Purjes with a bucket load
of unpaid bills and legal challenges.
In order for this place to open this coming season, an
experienced player with a hefty bank account will have to
step up to the plate by next month to get the infrastructure
ready to operate.
