Skiing Reviews - February 2012

CANNON CONTROVERSY

February 24th 2012 12:16
On the winds of change, there is talk among New Hampshire's
politco types to "lease" Cannon Mountain to private entities,
as they did with the other state-owned facility, Mount Sunapee.

Of course, diehard Cannon Mountain ski areas are against this
potential change of wind direction. They fear "commercialization"
and rising ticket prices.

Meanwhile Cannon remains a cash drain on the state's bottom line.
The recently installed Mittersill side double chair has yet to transport
skiers and riders at all this season.

Speaking of Mittersill, there is a proposal on the table for the local

Franconia Ski Club to pony up a cool US$2 mil to create and install
a homologated (world-class ski racing standards) snowmaking-served
giant slalom race run over there.

Will it happen? Stay tuned.

OHIO SKI AREA TO TORCH OWN BASE LODGE

February 17th 2012 22:38
Yes, the U.S state of Ohio does indeed have ski areas,
Brandywine--yes,its real name--has plans to torch and
destroy its existing base lodge.

What better way to destroy an aging building then lighting
it up and axing through doorways with aid of the local
fire department? As a "training" exercise, of course.

Peak Resorts, the ski area chain that owns Brandywine
plans to build a new and improved base lodge. But first,
the oldie but goodie has to go.

What better way to save on demolition costs than to burn that
sucker down, with the help of the local firemen of course.

Only in Ohio, don't you know?

ASCUTNEY QUAD MOVES TO NH

February 10th 2012 11:08
Say "bye, bye" to Ascutney Mountain's detachable quad
chairlift. It's moving interstate, from Vermont to New Hampshire.
The debt holders of the financially imploded Ascutney have cut
a deal with Peak -a chain of ski areas--to sell the
Garaventa CTEC quad chairlift.

Peak plans to install the lift at its Crotched Mountain property
in southern New Hampshire. Good news for Crotched skiers,
bad news for those hoping for a reopening of Ascutney any time
soon.

The total price tag for purchasing, removing and installing the
lift is estimated at US$3 million. If successful, the Ascutney
detachable quad will add approximately 25 more acres of ski
terrain on Crotched Mountain.

In retrospect, the family Plausteiner who ran Ascutney into
its second bankruptcy, got out at the right time a few seasons
ago. Ascutney would never have fiscally survived this rather
dismal natural snowfall season.
