Skiing Reviews - July 2011

STRATTON'S EXPEnsIVE FRee

July 21st 2011 21:44
Well you know, during the hot blazing days of no-snow,
North American summer season, ski areas try all kinds
of things to attract people to their cash registers---alpine
slides, circuses, mountain biking, golf, scenic chairlift
rides---the list goes on & on.

Oh yes, lest us not forget "free concerts." While this is all
well and good---typical ski area thinking is: " Yeah, we'll hire
the band, not charge admission but make our bucks on
BBQ and brew sales. Fine.

However, when a ski area under the control of the current
bleeding Intrawest corporate regime advertises a free

concert schedule line-up and then, sticks in a caveat,
"yeah, US$34.50 for tickets," well then it's not free.

Southern Vermont's Stratton Mountain--part of the going-
downhill-fast--Intrawest family of ski areas--has done just
that with their August 13th "Soulive concert.

We don't know, how does US$34.50 per ticket equate to
a so called "free summer concert summer series," as Stratton
terms it.

Perhaps the corporate treasurers of Intrawest Corporation can
shed some light on this quagmire?

BAG JUMP FOR GRANITE GORGE

July 20th 2011 22:07
Yeah baby, little Granite Gorge ski area in Keene, N.H.,
is putting in an inflatable bag jump for all you aerial-
inclined dudes and gals out there.

That's the way to make a small ski area rock! Yeah, let
me launch and land kinda safely in the bag.

Speaking of being in the bag, this place is also expanding
the BAR with a covered, all-weather deck. Alright!

In case you gotta go after doing the bag jump thing and
visiting the bar, the rest rooms are being expanded
big time!

Hey, not bad for a small area with major big competing
ski areas sooooo nearby. For smaller areas, it's

either recreate your hill or die in the competitive ski
and ride market these days.

LOON MOUNTAIN SPENDS BIG TIME

July 11th 2011 22:36
This summer, it seems Loon Mountain ski area in New
Hampshire is reinvesting in success. Their current
corporate powers-that-be have decreed they will up the
ante on the nearby competition by dropping big bucks
on 167 new tower snowguns, two new trails and a new
quarter million dollar grooming machine.

Loon is popular with the Boston metro population
because it's a relatively easy highway drive from downtown
Bean Town and the bed base is huge for a New Hampshire
ski area.

Yeah, the weekend crowds are nothing to be desired here,
but midweek, non-holiday skiing and riding rocks if you
pick your days right.

It's new to see American ski areas, well, reinvesting in
the future of American skiing & riding.

If the illustrious, tax-the-bejesus out of your citizens, state
of New Jersey didn't have enough fiscal problems already,
their legislature recently voted to give hundred million dollar
