Skiing Reviews - June 2011

ORDA TAKEOVER OF BELLEAYRE COMING

June 24th 2011 12:33
After a relatively profitable ski season, the Lake Placid-
based, Olympic Regional Development Authority--operators
of both Gore and Whiteface Mountains--is vying to take
over operations at Belleayre ski area in New York's Catskills
range.

Belleayre, under the auspices of New York State's Department
of Environmental Conservation has been struggling for decades.

Meanwhile, ORDA wrapped up the ski season US$296,000
in the black---on accounting paper anyway.

Of course, all these state-owned ski areas directly compete
with privately owned ski areas within their drive markets---a

topic which doesn't sit well with the owners of Hunter and
Windham Mountains.

The burning question of the day is: should financially-strapped
New York State, with its inept Legislature and shall we say,
scandal prone governors, be in the ski business at all?

On July 6, a big day for Germany, the IOC will announce
its decision of who will host the 2018 Winter Olympics.
Munich and nearby Garmish-Partenkinchen are strong
contenders to host these esteemed games.

Munich has not hosted an Olympics since the terror-ridden,
1972 Summer Olympic Games. Perhaps it is time to give
Germany a chance to stage a stellar Winter Olympics seven
years from now.

If nothing else, if Munich is chosen to host the 2018
Games, spectators can be assured they will be enjoying
some of the best beer the world has to offer during the

festivities.

SKI AREA MOTORCYCLE RACING

June 17th 2011 22:00
Let's face it, ski areas have a tough time during the dormant
summer months to make ends meet....So you know, SUN
PEAKS RESORT in Kamloops, British Columbia has decided
to host a Canadian Endoro motorcycle racing event on its
trails.

Yeah, baby....fire up those trail digging, high-powered
motorcycles. Rip up those trails. Make some noise.
Add some carbon to the air stream.

One skier asks, "couldn't there be a better way for viable
ski areas to make some bucks in the off-season, other
than uphill motorcycle racing? Come on man?"

What's next NASCAR on the ski trails?

Yeah baby, let's burn that gas....tear up the trails. Let's
make some noise!!!

Come on Sun Peaks, really now. Is this a good idea,
hosting rip up the land motorcycle races?

OKEMO'S MOUNTAIN COASTER ROCKS

June 6th 2011 12:24
