Skiing Reviews - April 2011

NEW ZEALAND READY TO SKI!

April 28th 2011 19:44
As the northern hemisphere ski season winds down, New
Zealand ski area are gearing up to welcome the snows.
Look for a June 4th opening day at Coronet Peak with new
snowmaking covered trails served by the Meadows
Express chairlift.

Also at Cornet Peak, the difficult-to-ride handle tow is history!
Replaced by a user-friendly "Magic Carpet" uphill ride.

Over at Mt. Hutt things are shaping up for a June 11th
kickoff date with expanded automated snowmaking to improve
the early-season snow quality near the Towers Triple chailrlift.

The Remarkables have been gearing up for their June 18th

opening date with major trail widening and the addition of more
snowmaking.

Let's all hope for good winter weather in New Zealand this season.
No seismic activity this ski and ride season, if you please.

HELMET LAW PASSES IN JERSEY

April 26th 2011 21:25
Well, there's now another reason to avoid skiing and riding
in New Jersey. Seems the so called "Garden State,"
has criminalized not skiing or riding without wearing a helmet.

The law will be enforceable commencing November 1, 2011
for anyone under 18 caught skiing or riding at any one of
New Jersey's massive ski areas without a helmet on.

Ohhhh, they'll have to hire extra cops to patrol the slopes
to enforce this one. Let's fill those Jersey jails with the
parents of skiers and riders.

And get this, it's not the "offender" who pays the price, but their

parents!

Vermont anyone? New Hampshire....Live Free or Die baby!

NEW BUBBLE CHAIRLIFT FOR MOUNT SNOW

April 25th 2011 10:34
As the old adage goes,"whatever goes around comes around,"
holds true in the world of skiing these days.

Back in the '70s, plexiglass covered chairlifts--commonly
know as "bubble chairs"--were all the rage. They protected
lift riders from the elements, yet they were not as expensive
as an enclosed gondola.

Mount Snow had one back in the day, but alas, maintenance
and vandalism were a major problem so it went the way of
the succession of the mountain's owners---banished to the
ash heap of ski history.

Today, with their customers tiring of freezing their behinds off
while riding up the mountain, current management has decreed
theire will be a six-passenger bubble chairlift installed for the
2011-2012 season.

The new Leitner Poma lift will replace Mount Snow's ancient
Summit Local triple chair.

This is a step in the right direction, but what this place really needs
is an enclosed summit gondola lift or an aerial tramway. It's a cold
ride up this wind-whipped mountain on many a winter 'morn.
