SUGARLOAF CHAIRLIFT DERAILS

December 29th 2010 11:49
An older Borvig-model chairlift derailed yesterday at Sugarloaf
Mountain in western Maine.

The drive cable slipped off one the lift tower sheaves which the cable
is guided up hill on. Chairs dropped over 25-ft, injuring seven customers.

Some riders, who were close enough to the ground when the cable
yo-yoed downwards had the good sense to jump off before their chair
sprung skyward again.

Thankfully, there were no fatalities.

BOLTON VALLEY FOR SALE AGAIN

December 26th 2010 23:19
Seems Vermont's Bolton Valley ski area is for sale once again.
Located a half hour drive from Burlington, the state's largest
city, this 700 acre ski area has had its ups and downs over the
last few decades.

The current owners have retained Mirus Resort Capital, a
Massachusetts based investment advisory firm, with seeking
a possible equity partner or an outright sale.

A few of the downfalls of this place are: the main base lodge
is leased, rather than owned by the ski area; many of the lifts
are slow relics of a bygone area and the competition is so

close and well, bigger

On the plus side, Bolton Valley is one of the few Vermont
ski areas that offer night skiing and the lift ticket prices
here are a relative bargain.

NEW BACKCOUNTRY TOURS AT RED MOUNTAIN

December 15th 2010 12:38
Running with the current off-piste skiing and snowboarding trend,
British Columbia's Red Mountain is opening up 300 acres of
terrain and offering guided tours into the backcountry.

The now legally open backcountry is located on Grey Mountain,
accessible through lift-accessed gate on Granite Mountain. Grey
Mountain offers descents of 2,200 consistent vertical drop
with a pleasant southern exposure.

Guided one-day and overnight guided backcountry tours can be
reserved through the Red Mountain Snow Sports School. Over
night guests stay in a heated yurt dubbed "The Alpine Glory."

All skiers and riders accessing Red Mountain's backcountry
areas are required to carry avalanche transceivers, probes
and shovels.
