Skiing Reviews - October 2010

WHITEFACE DEALS REVEALED

October 31st 2010 13:41
Whiteface Mountain, just outside Lake Placid, N.Y., announced
a November 26 opening day. This year, the former "Olympic
Mountain," has a few ways to save on lift tickets.

On "Super Sundays"--December 12, January 2, February 6,
March 13 and April 3--full day lift tickets are only US$35.

For somewhat frequent skiers, purchasing an "Empire Card"
is the way to go. In exchange for US$89, card holders
receive one lift ticket and the right to save fifteen dollars
on every ticket purchased for their personal use throughout
the season. Plus after ponying up for five tickets, the sixth

one is on the house.

Here's a weirdo deal: Show up at the Whiteface ticket
window on nonholiday Wednesdays with an empty or
full Coca-Cola can in your hand for the privilege of
paying only $38 to ski and ride.

FOUR SKI FOR FORTY-NINE BUCKS

October 27th 2010 15:04
In these tight economic times, it's refreshing to have one
New Hampshire ski area offering a great deal for parents
with children. King Pine, a family-friendly modest sized ski
area and resort, is running a "Moonlight Family 4-Pack"
rate this season.

For US$49, a family of four skis and rides at King Pine every
Saturday and holiday evening. That's five hours of lift time
from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. That's cheaper than taking the kids to
the movies or bowling!.

Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (holiday weeks excluded)
are two tickets for the price of one at King Pine.

Yeah, the hill isn't a mega-mountain resort, but what it lacks in
size it compensates with providing customers with a fun, safe
enjoyable on-slope atmosphere.

NEW OWNERS FOR NORTHSTAR-AT-TAHOE

October 26th 2010 15:26
And then there was one. Booth Creek Resort Properties, LLC,
once the illustrious owners of six ski areas from Washington to
New Hampshire, has sold its interest in California's Northstar-
at-Tahoe to Vail Resorts. Booth Creek is down to one remaining
ski area in its corporate grip, Sierra-at-Tahoe.

Vail Resorts plans to offer combo lift passes with its other
California holding, Heavenly Mountain Resort.

Seems like a strange time of year for all these ski areas
to be flipping to new owners like hamburgers on a cheesy
fast-food chain's grill. Perhaps the greedy bankers are
forcing the cash-strapped owners of these properties
to sell or else.........face the hamburger bun cutting knife
of foreclosure procedures.

When will these ski area chain operators learn that sticky to
one or two resort properties, running them well and turning
a modest profit, is better than acquiring more ski areas until
their fiscal shell game blows up in their faces.
