Skiing Reviews - August 2010

Under broken cloud cover, the long awaited New Zealand
National Alpine Championships kicked off today at Coronet
Peak. Teams from the southern hemisphere, North America
Slovenia and Switzerland will be competing with an overall
field of 85 male and 62 female athletes.

The giant slalom event was held on The Hurdle trail. Temperature
was a comfortable one degree celsius. Snow depths varied
from 90 cm at the base to 120 cm at the summit.

The National Championship races will be followed by the
Australia/New Zealand Cup Races.

HUNTER MOUNTAIN'S NEW SIX-PACK CHAIR

August 30th 2010 13:55
Hunter Mountain, that venerable powerhouse of Catskills
skiing and riding, is presently installing a six-pack
detachable high-speed chairlift. The new Leitner Poma
chairlift replaces an older four-seater detachable chairlift.

Dubbed "The Kaatskill Flyer," the new lift will cut lift
line waits, getting more people up the mountain faster.
This is both good and bad. Remember whatever goes up,
usually comes down the mountain fast.

This means that while lift waits will be shorter, there will be more
skiers and riders contending for space on the trails coming

down--picture pinball machine action.

Overall though, new lifts are a positive thing for skiers and riders.
It means the mountain is reinvesting in its future than taking the money
out before falling into bankruptcy proceedings.

Hunter Mountain is a well run privately owned ski area without
meddling by corporate suits who have driven many a fine resort
into the ground. Can anyone say, "American Skiing Company?"

TAOS MOUNTAIN MUSIC FESTIVAL

August 26th 2010 12:49
This year, the second coming of the Taos Mountain Music
Festival promises to be even better than last summer's
inaugural event where over 4000 attended.

Set in the beautiful outdoor setting of Taos Ski Valley,
the September fifth event kicks off at 10 a.m., and rocks
into the night.

Headlined by former Allman Brother, Warren Haynes' Gov't
Mule band, the festival promises to deliver a Woodstockesque
vibe. The Yonder Mountain String Band, Shemekia Copeland,
Mia Borders, Mariachi Calor and Radio La Chusma will be rocking
the mountain throughout the day.

There will be a Strawberry Fair scene with food vendors, things
to do for the kids and of course, merchandise of all sorts for sale.

Tickets are a reasonable US$42 advanced sale; US$48 at the
gate. A very fair price for a 12 hour concert jam!

Plenty of hotel rooms are available and the festival organizers
promise to deliver your tickets to your room if you order ahead of time.
RV sites are also available but the tent sites are already sold out.
