Under broken cloud cover, the long awaited New Zealand
National Alpine Championships kicked off today at Coronet
Peak. Teams from the southern hemisphere, North America
Slovenia and Switzerland will be competing with an overall
field of 85 male and 62 female athletes.
The giant slalom event was held on The Hurdle trail. Temperature
was a comfortable one degree celsius. Snow depths varied
from 90 cm at the base to 120 cm at the summit.
The National Championship races will be followed by the
Australia/New Zealand Cup Races.
