Skiing Reviews - September 2009

SUN PEAKS RESORT READY TO ROCK

September 30th 2009 16:16
With a new heli-skiing partner, brand spanking new extended stay
lodge, a shin slapping Irish Pub, a Winter Wine Festival and the
rather bizarro "Snowshoe Golf" course set to open, Sun Peaks
Resort in the Canadian Rockies is ready to rock this winter!

If the lift served powder skiing and riding weren't enough, resort
guests can book a day of heli-skiing with shuttle service to
Mike Wiegele's helipad. Guests will get in three to five runs
and then be shuttled back to Sun Peaks by Olympian Nancy
Greene's shuttle service in time for a hearty dinner.

Those with a craving for golf can don snowshoes and head

out for an afternoon round on the new Snowshoe Golf Course.
Rentals of all equipment to play will be available on site.

Apres-ski, the new Morrisey's Public House Irish pub in the
resort village promises to be "a good time was had by all,"
type of place.

For those interested in staying longer than a few days,
the new Kookaburra Lodge offers affordable residential
apartments in the heart of the village.

Don't forget the expanded Winter Wine Festival slated for
your sipping enjoyment January 16-24, 2010. The festival
features the ice wines and varietals produced by the renowned
Okanagan Valley wineries of British Columbia.

BEST BET FOR EARLY SEASON EASTERN SKIING

September 29th 2009 19:23
If you're an eastern U.S. skier or rider itching to make those
first scratchy early season turns by late October, your best
bet will be to head to Sunday River in Maine.

Sunday River made snow last Saturday in the South Ridge
Area. Of course it was only a test. Had this been an
actual snow emergency you would have heard about it
by now.

But still. Hey, they made snow to blow out the snowmaking
system and test fire the snowguns. More power to them.
No other eastern resort has made snow yet.

Last year, Sunday River opened for skiing and riding on

Halloween. This place is looking to capture the early
season market, something Killington and Mount Snow
used to strive for under previous ownership regimes.

In addition to Sunday River, watch for an early opening
at Bretton Woods in New Hampshire and perhaps Loon
Mountain as well.

Meanwhile, keep on mountain biking, stretching and hitting
the weight room to get ready for opening day. It won't be
long!

NEW LIFTS FOR WESTERN CANADA

September 28th 2009 17:20
Three new lifts are being installed in the Canadian Rockies this fall.
As you might expect, Whistler Mountain will have one and so will
Marmot Basin and Nakiska.

Mamot Basin's new C$8 million high speed quad chairlift is anxiously
awaited by skiers and riders this winter. It replaces both the
Tranquilizer Chair and Kiefer T-bar. Rising 596 vertical meters,
the lift dubbed "The Canadian Rockies Express" will transport
skiers and riders from the base of the lower mountain to near the
top of the Paradise Chair, all in a mere 7.5 minutes time.

Nakiska's new "Gold Chair Express" lift is a high-speed quad chairlift
running skiers and riders up to the summit in less than five minutes.
Rising 468.38 vertical meters, the new chair has a maximum capacity of
transporting 1910 passengers uphill per hour. Bye, bye, lift lines.

Whistler's Creekside Timing Flats Express detachable quad chair
is not very exciting but a necessary addition installed for the rapidly
approaching Winter Olympics. It's purpose is to whisk spectators,
media and personnel back and forth between the Creekside Village
to the Timing Flats, where the alpine events finish line and grandstand
will be located.

Many grateful spectators will appreciate the uphill ride rather than
hoofing it up hill during the Games.
