9/11 ALYESKA CLIMBATHON

September 9th 2010 15:21
If you're looking for a challenging, healthy activity on September
eleventh, Alaska's Alyeska ski resort is running their third annual
North Face Vertical Challenge Climbathon.

It's designed as a scenic endurance event. Competitors walk,
hike or run up the North Face Trail and then return to the
base via the tramway. The idea is to accomplish as many
roundtrips as possible between nine in the morning to seven in
the evening.

Each trip up is over 2,000 vertical feet. In last year's event,
top competitors logged over 20,000 vertical feet!

Of course, one can simply take their time, enjoy the scenery and

ride the tram back down once, twice or go for the max.

Registration is a modest US$20 in advance or US$30 the day
of the race. This event is hosted by the Alaska Mountain
Runners Club

MT HUTT ACCESS ROAD BOMBED

September 8th 2010 15:46
New Zealand's Mount Hutt ski area's access road was bombed
recently---no worries, it was carried out by friendly fire. After last
Saturday's earthquake, extensive precaution measures had to be
done to insure the mountain was safe to reopen.

Crews bombed the access road in attempt to dislodge any rocks
which may have been dislodged by the recent rumblings. The
maintenance guys also went over the lift system with a fine tooth
comb, searching for any structural damage.

On the mountain, ski patrollers carefully checked over the trail
network and snowpack to be sure everything was safe for skiers

and riders to enjoy.

Down below, all the buildings, gas lines and even the snowmaking
reservoir received a thorough going over before reopening.

On a lighter not: Supermodel, just returning from a UK recording
gig will rock the mountain on Sunday at noon.

NATIONAL SKI PATROL VS PENNSYLVANIA

September 7th 2010 14:56
There's a controversy brewing in the Pocono Mountains
of Pennsylvania between the state Department of Health
and the National Ski Patrol. It seems that over the years
the Pennsylvania Ski Patrol has been voluntarily working
with the health department to increase emergency responder
training opportunities for its members. Now, the state
is considering imposing all sorts of mandatory training
regulations on ski patrols as it does for municipal ambulance
services.

Well, the National Ski Patrol doesn't like that idea because
it would be expensive for volunteer ski patrollers to comply
with. Volunteer ski patrollers have received training through
the National Ski Patrols and their home mountains since the
late 1930s.

Pennsylvania ski area operators are concerned that if the
state increases mandatory and expensive training requirements
for their volunteer patrollers they may drop out of patrolling.
This would force ski areas to hire more professional patrollers
and thereby drive up the cost of lift tickets.

So for now, both sides are talking. Perhaps the Pennsylvania
Department of Health will back down from imposing reams of
new regulations upon this volunteer corps which has served the
skiing public well for generations.

Stay tuned.......................
